This course is for those who've had little or no formal instruction in whitewater kayaking. 
In this class you'll learn all the basics for whitewater paddling:
- The names of the parts of a kayak
- How to enter and exit the boat,
- How to properly grip the paddle,
- How to wet exit (get out of an overturned kayak), and
- How to T rescue (flip upright assisted by another boat.)
You'll also learn the basic paddling strokes:
- Forward stroke,
- Sweep stroke,
- Draw and sculling draw, plus
- Low and high braces.
Finally, you'll learn how to combine these strokes to paddle on a river in whitewater.
This course includes the River Theory class and the Moving Water session, both of which are a required perquisite to paddling on a club trip.
Duration: 6 hours
Location: Scona Pool
Equipment: Kayak, spraydeck and paddle provided. You will need swimming gear, (Nose plugs and goggles are recommended, but not required).
Price: $150 and club membership

Basic courses for the remainder of 2010 will be scheduled once there are a minimum number of interested students registered.
Currently, the club can rent the following time slots:
- Mondays 8:00-9:30pm.
- Thursdays 8:30-10:00pm
