Upper Red Deer river, 2008The United Albertan Paddling Society (UAPS) is a kayaking organization focused on introducing both youth and adults to kayaking as an active lifestyle choice. The UAPS teaches new members paddling skills in a pool, a safe and controlled environment, and then introduces them to paddling on the river with Alberta Whitewater Association (AWA) certified coaches.

Our coaching staff is made up of AWA certified instructors, both men and women from all walks of life.

One of the features that make the UAPS distinctive from other kayaking clubs in the area is their ability to bring beginners into the sport. The UAPS offers instruction clinics in Basics, Stroke Improvement I, Stroke Improvement II, Roll Clinics, and Playboating. It also provides Beginner Development clinics in the summer. See the 'Learn' section of the website for more information about each course.

Surfing on the Lower Kananaskis river, 2009A large percent of our new members are women, which we attribute to out progressive clinic structure and certified female coaching staff. Success in kayaking is based on proper technique, confidence, and enjoyment of the sport. It is not an upper body, brute force strength sport. The women coaches and trip leaders are able to demonstrate that this sport can be enjoyed by anyone with the desire.

For novice paddlers, whitewater paddling is a sport with many potential risks. The best way for novices to learn about these risks and the practices to mitigate them is to paddle with experienced paddlers. The UAPS provides opportunities novice paddlers have to learn from experienced paddlers, as well as giving experienced paddlers the opportunity to mentor and instruct new paddlers while ensuring safety guidelines are followed.

Success in kayaking is based on proper technique, confidence and enjoyment of the sport. It can be enjoyed by anyone with the desire, so grab your bathing suit and join us!
