The UAPS Whitewater Progression Program (WPP) is the perfect progression for the adventuresome intermediate. This program will help build the skills and confidence to start exploring more exciting and challenging rivers.

Starting on the Kananaskis river with a solid weekend of skill development and playboating, we challenge paddlers with more difficult moves on a river that they are already familiar with. Building on this weekend, the course will move on to two more exciting weekends of river running in some of Alberta’s classic class III rivers.

Throughout the program there is a huge focus on group management and safety. Included in the course are dry-land sessions around the campfire where trip planning, gear selection, and kayaking theory will be discussed. We also introduce participants to the world of rope work and some of the tips and tricks to using your rescue gear.

Because the river difficulty steps up quite noticeably from the BDP, the cap that we place on registration is quite low. Enrollment is limited to 6 paddlers per season. This ensures an optimal instructor to student ratio where all participants receive focused attention.

Many of the paddlers who have completed this program have continued on to become leaders in the UAPS community.

The Beginner Development Program (BDP) has been structured to drain your adrenal gland while developing your kayaking skills. You will find yourself lost in a torrent of whitewater while questioning your life choices. Whitewater kayaking is not for everyone, but if you are ready to make the move from couch surfing to kayak surfing, then we look forward to helping you embrace your inner adrenaline junkie (it’s just kind of what we’re good at.)

The program consists of four weekend trips throughout the summer on rivers of increasing difficulty. We will get you started on the North Saskatchewan River near Rocky Mountain House. This is your skill development weekend teaching you the fundamentals needed for the remainder of the program. Here you will learn the joys of involuntarily swimming in glacial waters.

After completing your skills weekend, we will step it up by running rivers with names like the Whirlpool, and taking on features like Jimbo’s Staircase, Turbocharger and Widow Maker.

Much of the equipment for the program is supplied by the UAPS (kayak, paddle, PFD, and helmet) but you will need to invest in proper kayaking clothing (wetsuit, drytop, and river footwear.) This investment will ensure you enjoy your time on the river, rather than turning blue from hypothermia.

BDP2 was developed as an intermediary step between the BDP and WPP. In the past we’ve had many students that weren’t quite ready for the big jump into WPP, so they chose to repeat the BDP once or twice in order to build their skillset and confidence. Fortunately, our club has grown substantially in the past few years and we now have a sufficient number of coaches to run an additional program!

This program will be run in tandem with the BDP. We’ll all be camping together and exchanging stories by campfire on how…entertaining… the runs were. While for the most part we’ll be paddling the same rivers as the BDP, the BDP2 will be exploring new sections and developing additional skillsets focused on leadership and group management. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the confidence to start exploring new rivers with your crew in a safe and manageable way? Well, that’s what we’ll be working towards.

Enrollment is limited to 6 paddlers per season.
